Balclutha Primary School is a Multi Cultural Full State Primary School providing education for girls and boys from age 5 until they leave to attend Secondary School.
Our School
Built in 1950, remodelled in 1989 and again in 2005, Balclutha School is a two storied wooden structure consisting of 13 classrooms (including 3 relocatable rooms), a library, video room, resource rooms, staffroom and offices. A wooden school hall, upgraded in 1993, is within the boundaries. In 2007 toilets, one prefab and the staff kitchen are to be upgraded.
Attached to our school are the Speech/Language Therapy Clinic (now the Group Special Education base in South Otago), used by a visiting Speech / language therapist and Dental Clinic and, on an adjacent site, the Technology Centre. All of these serve other schools as well as our own.
One school residence, managed by the Board of Trustees, 4 teacher flats are sited across the street from the school.
Our school playground consists of a flat grass and concrete area with a large adventure playground. The children also have access to Netball and Tennis Courts and the Borough Sports ground adjacent to the back entrance of the school.
There are now 10 Classroom Teachers, three Part-time Release Teachers, a part time Reading Recovery Teacher, a Principal, two Technology Teachers, three RTLB and one R.T. Lit Teacher, one Truancy Officer, seven Teacher Aides, two School Secretaries, a full-time Caretaker and two part-time Cleaners.
Staff are dedicated and very hard working, and have a very positive relationship with Board of Trustees and Parent Teachers’ Association.
Teachers are actively involved in professional development, through involvement in a range of seminars, in-service and courses.
With parental support, children are involved in a wide range of cultural and sporting events.
